Americans consume more cow milk and it’s products per person than most population in the world.
So Americans should have wonderful strong bones, right?
Unfortunately not.
A recent study showed that American women aged 50ys and older have one of the highest rates of hip fracture in the world.
The only countries with higher rates are in Europe and South Pacific (Australia and New Zealand), where they consume even more milk than the US.
What is going on???
An excess rate of hip fractures is often used as a reliable indicator of Osteoporosis (disease of the bones) that affects men and women (often after menopause)
It’s often claimed to be due to an inadequate intake of calcium.
Calcium is very important for strong and healthy bones.
Let me break it down.
Studies have shown that an impressively strong association between animal protein (meat and milk) and bone fracture rates.
These research explained that animal protein, unlike plant protein, increased acid load in the body.
An increased acid load means that our blood and tissues become more acidic. The body does not like this acidic environment and begins to fight it.
In order to neutralize the acid, the body uses calcium, which acts as a a very effective base. This calcium, however, must come from somewhere in the body.
It ends up being pulled from the bones, and the calcium loss weaken the bones, putting the body at greater risk for fracture.
This is shown by the fact when animal protein is consumed, the metabolic acid is increased, and as a result, the amount of calcium in the urine is increased.
Still want to take milk, think again.
However, there are several other alternatives, there are different plants milk such as almond milk, soya milk.
